Bomb proof horses

A few weeks ago, Les and I spent a beautiful Spring day in Olustee, Florida watching the reenactment of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Olustee (or the Battle of Ocean Pond).

Even after our own battle with traffic and finding a place to park, we got there in time for the parade.

We wandered around the encampments, ate some Civil War egg rolls, and wandered to the battle site to get a good seat. We were told to sit closer to the Union side since it was a Confederate win, most of the action would be on the Yankee side.  We had great seats to watch the animals stage and always knew right before the cannons were about to fire.

When the battle began, my eyes were on the horses.  I couldn’t believe how calm they were with people yelling and screaming (think the real Rebel Yell), gunshots going off, not to mention cannons and the subsequent explosions!  They were the definition of ‘bomb proof’!

After the battle, the mule drawn wagons came to clear the field.

But in the end, every human and animal was safe – allowed to fight another day.

About Heather Hamel

Growing up with horses is a little girls dream come true. Heather’s dream in life was to be a horse trainer - how dreams change - sort of! She moved to the wonderfully historic town of St. Augustine, Florida and was a historic tour guide and a ghost story teller while putting herself through college to become a special education teacher. After graduating, she felt the pull of horses in her life again. That's when she met Kobi! She learned quickly that when you own horses you become a part time vet, part time nutritionist, and full time equestrian. She wouldn't change a thing! In addition to being completely obsessed with her herd, she still teaches and tutors students with learning disabilities, and more specifically, dyslexia.
