About two and a half weeks ago, Sugar had a small puncture wound on her right front leg when she came in for dinner. It didn’t look bad, she wasn’t limping, and it wasn’t tender – so I didn’t worry about her.
A week later it was still swollen, but not hot or tender and she wasn’t lame. I washed it with Betadine, slathered it with furizone and wrapped it up. With all the rain and muck around here, I only left it wrapped a couple of days before checking on it. It still looked good and healthy, just swollen. Thinking I had wrapped her leg too tight, I didn’t re-wrap it.
A few days later I had to put shavings down in the horses flooded stalls, so of course the next morning, she had a stall shaving stuck in her wound. I scrubbed it again, no apparent tenderness, and wrapped it.
The next day she was limping and holding up her leg. I unwrapped it and the smell almost knocked both of us down. It was now so tender, poor Sugar attempted to strike out every time I touched it.
Time to call the vet. He thinks Sugar got her leg cast and crushed it somehow and now has a bacterial infection. She’s on antibiotics (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim)twice a day in her food (plus bute for the pain), I’m to wash her leg twice a day as well and slather it with Silver Sulfadiazine creme. No wrapping.
Hopefully, she’ll be doing much better in a week and won’t need an x-ray or sonogram.
I have the next ten days cut out for me. I didn’t include any pix – it’s kinda gross right now:(
