Interesting article from thehorse.com by Christa Leste-Lasserre called Riders’ Perception of Rein Tension found its way to my inbox recently.
I agree that riders probably judge themselves to have much more contact than they do, but found it interesting that dressage riders tended to be closer with their estimates to their actual tension than riders of other disciplines.
Toni rode Kobi several weeks ago and asked how much rein tension I used. Just watching her ride, I thought it looked fine…until I rode him again. I use much more tension that I told her to use. I thought it was an interesting fact. I’m sure I’m one of those riders who are afraid of being too harsh on my horse’s mouth (both with me and other riders).
But this article opened my eyes – beware, Kobi!
