It’s no secret my frustrations with Sugar. She’s a great horse, don’t get me wrong, but has very strong, moody mare tendencies, which I don’t have the energy to deal with.
I saw a tote bag few days ago in a Rod’s catalog with the saying: Amazing Horse Do Not Just Happen. It led me to think about just how much work I put into Kobi. The first summer I had him, I worked with him twice a day – in the AM with our trainer and then again in the PM to reinforce what we had learned that morning. But look at how far we are now. And Sugar is no where near as flighty and alright, I’ll say it, dangerous as Kobi was in the beginning – maybe her training won’t take as long.
Toni came out a few days ago to help me work with Sugar. She showed me her lunging commands (oh, joy) and I even got up and trotted that mare. I must admit that is wasn’t as bad or scary as I thought her trot would be. It’s much bouncier than Kobi’s (but really what horse has the gaits he has?), and she throws her shoulders to the outside, but with a little consistent time and effort on my part I feel confident we can overcome this.
