An Amazing Journey

My good friend, Sandra, has been telling me all week, “Enjoy the journey.” She’s referring to my preparation for the FWA conference in Orlando where I came to pitch Kobi’s story.

Today has been an incredible ride!  I had my pitch session with Nicole Resciniti from The Seymour Agency.  True to form, I was nervous and neurotic!  I’m sure my voice quivered and my hands shook, but she never mentioned it.  Saying that she was ‘so nice’, doesn’t cover it…but she was!

I rambled through Kobi’s pitch and then mentioned I also had a trailer, cover art, head shots, etc. if she wanted to see them.  She did.  I think she was most intrigued was with the collage of real pictures I had, including his freeze brand.  She asked about it and I launched into the BLM mustang processing, showing the US on the brand and explaining that’s what I used to trace his history, including his jail time!

At the end, she requested I send Kobi’s entire manuscript.  Obviously his story is the one I’m most passionate about and she really liked that.  My goal was to be passionate, not crazy and hopefully that came out!

Her only suggestion was a different, more fun middle grade title…maybe one that expresses Kobi’s sassy, snarky attitude.  She said I could keep ‘Kobi’ in the title….lose ‘memoir’.

Any suggestions?

About Heather Hamel

Growing up with horses is a little girls dream come true. Heather’s dream in life was to be a horse trainer - how dreams change - sort of! She moved to the wonderfully historic town of St. Augustine, Florida and was a historic tour guide and a ghost story teller while putting herself through college to become a special education teacher. After graduating, she felt the pull of horses in her life again. That's when she met Kobi! She learned quickly that when you own horses you become a part time vet, part time nutritionist, and full time equestrian. She wouldn't change a thing! In addition to being completely obsessed with her herd, she still teaches and tutors students with learning disabilities, and more specifically, dyslexia.

What a great experience! I could tell from your calls that it been an exciting weekend. I don’t know about snarky, but how about something like “Kobi, the Great”, with a subtitle of “Straight from the Horse’s Mouth”? I may have suggested the subtitle previously. It’s always worth a shot. Love you.
