Saturday Night – Plan B

I haven’t seen Les’s 5-year-old grand-daughter, Karoline, since school started two months ago.  So when I found out she was coming over on Saturday, I planned a fun-filled time for all of us!

1.  She would have her first ‘real’ riding lesson on Sugar.

2.  She would have her favorite meal – BBQ wings

3.  We would have a bonfire complete with roasting marshmallows.

Ah, the best laid plans.  She had her first lesson – it went well, rider and horse both finished safely!  But immediately following the lesson, we had an un-planned rain shower.  It didn’t last long enough to saturate the ground, only long enough to wet the woodpile for the bonfire.

During dinner of macaroni and cheese and BBQ wings, I mentioned how disappointed I was that they wouldn’t be able to roast marshmallows…from the mouths of babes…Karoline asked why we couldn’t just roast them over the stove…so we tried it!

Success!

About Heather Hamel

Growing up with horses is a little girls dream come true. Heather’s dream in life was to be a horse trainer - how dreams change - sort of! She moved to the wonderfully historic town of St. Augustine, Florida and was a historic tour guide and a ghost story teller while putting herself through college to become a special education teacher. After graduating, she felt the pull of horses in her life again. That's when she met Kobi! She learned quickly that when you own horses you become a part time vet, part time nutritionist, and full time equestrian. She wouldn't change a thing! In addition to being completely obsessed with her herd, she still teaches and tutors students with learning disabilities, and more specifically, dyslexia.

Hi Heather! I still remember clearly the first time I rode a real horse (not those poor carnival ponies). It was thrilling. I’m sure Karoline will also remember it, and you, for the rest of her life.
