Sugar has the world’s most sensitive skin. Not only does she need to be brushed with a ‘natural’ brush, but if the BIG horse flies bite her she swells up unbelievably. I’m starting to think she does it on purpose though since she ALWAYS seems to get bit right were the saddle or girth would rub on her. I’ve tried putting Kobi’s mixture of Skin So Soft with Furazone with little reduction in swelling.
While at my favorite local store, Tractor Supply, I went down the horse salve aisle and found the ichthammol. It stated it was a ‘drawing agent’ and since I want whatever is making her swell draw out, I figured it would work. Now it is some nasty stuff. It’s a bit thinner that tar, but won’t wash off. I recommend using gloves. It also must have an undesirable odor. I put it on Kobi since my hands were already icky and he wouldn’t stop flehman! I had to put it on two spots on Sugar…her neck and girth area. Her neck dropped back down within 12 hours and now, 36 hours later, is normal. Her girth area is trying to go down. I think since I was a bit later putting it on her and tried other products first, that’s why it’s taking longer…but it’s going down too!
The second product I love is the fly spray misting system for the barn. I’ve seen them around for a couple of years but finally talked to someone who used it and said that it makes such a huge difference in her barn and even works on gnats. That’s all I needed to hear. I purchased the system and an extra, heavy-duty mosquito spray refill since the mosquito’s have been so bad since we had all the rain. I haven’t had it long, but after only 15 hours I could tell a difference. The horses weren’t covered in gnats and neither was their poo! It was the first morning in a long time that Kobi was able to greet me with his head over his stall door instead of scratching himself!
I will keep you posted on the success of my two new favorites!
