Lameness and hoof shape

Another article I came across recently discussed the relationship between hoof shape and lameness. I thought it was interesting – if a horse could be identified as having a possible lameness issue in the future based on current hoof shape, it would definitely change pre-purchase exams.

According to the article from The Horse by Stacey Oke, DVM, MSc, certain hoof shapes can indicate chronic lameness and other shapes point to a sound horse.

The study showed that asymetrical hooves may be present in hoof-related lameness, lame hooves tend to be taller and more upright than non-lame hooves, and the lame hoof had a longer toe and lower, collapsed heel than non-lame hooves.

Next time my farrier, Alan, comes out to trim Kobi and Sugar I plan to ask his professional opinion and see what his observations have shown him.  I love studies and research articles, but sometimes nothing beats looking at hooves all day!

About Heather Hamel

Growing up with horses is a little girls dream come true. Heather’s dream in life was to be a horse trainer - how dreams change - sort of! She moved to the wonderfully historic town of St. Augustine, Florida and was a historic tour guide and a ghost story teller while putting herself through college to become a special education teacher. After graduating, she felt the pull of horses in her life again. That's when she met Kobi! She learned quickly that when you own horses you become a part time vet, part time nutritionist, and full time equestrian. She wouldn't change a thing! In addition to being completely obsessed with her herd, she still teaches and tutors students with learning disabilities, and more specifically, dyslexia.
