Making Progress

Everyone’s made progress this week. My dear friend Kaye, was finally able to buy a box of Cheerio’s in the bright yellow box (Jake’s favorite post founder treat) and was able to let Alan, the farrier, come trim the horses without me watching every snip.

Not only was that a great way to battle some of those control issues I’m learning I have, but it also means that I’m trusting the horses hooves are healthy. Big step. Now Sugar does still have a touch of seedy toe, but according to Alan, “if that mare’d grow a hoof, it’d be gone by now.” So I will continue to treat her feet with Thrush Buster until her hoof grows out enough to finish trimming it out. This is the closest to a clean bill of hoof health that I’ve had in a LONG time:)

Hopefully the trim in 5 weeks will find me celebrating perfectly healthy hooves!

Oh, and in case your were wondering, Kobi’s feet are perfect – like usual (according to Alan)!

As a teaser for the next blog, there should be a video of Sugar (and Toni’s) progress with teaching Sugar to bow via clicker training!

About Heather Hamel

Growing up with horses is a little girls dream come true. Heather’s dream in life was to be a horse trainer - how dreams change - sort of! She moved to the wonderfully historic town of St. Augustine, Florida and was a historic tour guide and a ghost story teller while putting herself through college to become a special education teacher. After graduating, she felt the pull of horses in her life again. That's when she met Kobi! She learned quickly that when you own horses you become a part time vet, part time nutritionist, and full time equestrian. She wouldn't change a thing! In addition to being completely obsessed with her herd, she still teaches and tutors students with learning disabilities, and more specifically, dyslexia.
